Laundromat.86 is the result of the Diploma ‘25 module of the Cultural Critique Program that included the students of the Curatorial Studies and Kulturpublizistik.

The project featured the graduates of both programs of the 2024-2025 scholar year. The concept took inspiration from a laundromat and attempted to navigate the absurd meeting place of thesis-writing and laundromat-encounters to showcase each graduating student’s projects. 

The opening event involved DJ set performances by Chloé, carakaro, pink pop princess and fresh_pauli, as well as a drag performance by Igigo Wu and fresh_pauli. The mediation program consisted of two screenings of the short film
an incarnation, or a possession, we cannot say and a day of readings, listenings and screenings at the Cabaret Voltaire.

Curatorial Statement

“You are about to operate Laundromat.86: follow each graduate’s process of academic writing in their own washing machine! Within the room, you will find 24 machines, each calibrated to a single thesis. To access a project, please bring its specific coin to the Central Booth.

CAUTION: Each machine engages with a world.

The Central Booth of the laundromat stores on each hanger a pressed textile for you to take a look at. You just have to ask for it with your coin! While you’re there, feel free to grab a drink and hang out with some strangers. If you miss some more reading, look out for our library-basket to browse texts that got lost in the machines!

Laundromat.86 is a place where theses get collected, processed, mixed, tumbled and worn. Within this text(ile) chaos, we invite you to look for community in the most topsy-turvy space.”
